AMD's New X4 Quad Core
In the release the awaited Phenom X4 9850, AMD hopes to leave some of the problems that plaged the earlier revisions of the AMD quad behind. Problems such as the TLB bug which hobbled the performance. AMD is also going back to the X4 naming convention that they toyed with before the Phenom launch. Phenoms will now carry the X4 designation for quads and X3 for tri-cores (quads with a faulty core disabled). The Phenom X4 9850 ships with a 2.5GHz clock speed and should be avaliable in retailers soon.

XP Home Extended 2 Years ... Somewhat?
XPWith Microsoft in a hurry to end its Windows XP sales there is some possibly slight good news for XP fans. Windows XP Home Edition will now be sold for 2 more years on budget laptops. Microsoft has stated they have decided to do this because of "strong demand" for the product. The Associated Press seems to be saying that XP will be available for a full year after the next version of Windows is released. We will see how it all turns out as I don't believe anybody knows for sure when XP sales will disappear. I've been told many different end dates on the XP sales as a retailer and none of them have stuck yet.

Adobe Flash Flaw Results in Vista Exploit
Pwn To OwnThe Pwn To Own contest at CanSecWest which focuses on rewarding hackers for gaining access to systems has brought to realization a new flaw. Hackers at this contest were only allowed to target the operating system directly on the first day. On the second day hackers could target "standard" operating system applications. This ultimately ended up with only a hacker being able to break through the MacBok Air. Then on the third day users were allowed to target "popular" software for the operating systems. This allowed hackers to gain access to the Windows Vista machine by finding a undiscovered Adobe Flash flaw. The hackers won $5,000 cash and they get to keep the laptop. Untouched during the competition was a laptop running Ubuntu was untouched. The details of the Apple and Adobe flaws will not be disclosed until the companies have released patches for them.

Comcast To Treat all Internet Traffic Equally
ComcastComcast has been under a lot of scrutiny lately about its practices towards file sharing to its users. At first Comcast denied allegations that it was hampering certain types of Internet traffic specifically Peer to Peer traffic. But after public interest groups and even the FCC were in on the allegations a investigation by the Associated Press revealed that it was indeed blocking certain traffic.

Shrink That Vista Install Size
vLite"Windows Vista users now have a way to cut down the operating system's famously large installation footprint with a free software tool. Developer Dino Nuhagic released version 1.1 of vLite last week. The configuration utility is designed to remove Vista components such as Windows Media Player, Windows Mail, Windows Photo Viewer, Wallpapers and other utilities before installation, creating a new installable image. The utility can also integrate other components such as hotfixes, drivers and language packs into the new image and has an unattended install function, Nuhagic said. Tools such as vLite are a response to concerns about what even Microsoft has conceded is Vista's enormous install size. Similar tools exist for Windows XP, such as Nuhagic's own nLite."
